DEEPICE Winter school on snow sciences, March 2022

In the framework of the DEEPICE project, a winter school on snow-process sciences will be organized in Finse (Norway) in March 2022 (20-26).

6 places are available for external PhD Students

PROGRAM

The DEEPICE Winter school will focus on snow-process sciences (2 ECTS) with theoretical and practical courses and exercises.

It is aimed at PhD students who are involved in ice core climate record interpretation.

The school will include courses on:

  • Field campaign preparation
  • Analysis of the snow pack
  • Snow-Air exchange
  • Field observations
  • Water isotope measurements

LECTURERS INCLUDE:  Hans Christian Steen-Larsen (University of Bergen), Amaëlle Landais (CNRS – LSCE), Hubertus Fischer (University of Bern), Kerim Nisancioglu (University of Bergen), Bo Møllesøe  Vinther (University of Copenhagen), Louise Sime (UKRI – BAS), Julien Westhoff  (University of Copenhagen), Magdalena Hofmann (PICARRO)

You will receive feedback on your application by the 19th of January 2022 at the latest.

REGISTRATION FEE: The course has a registration fee of approximatively 650 € for non DEEPICE students and 350€ for DEEPICE students, which will cover food (breakfasts, lunches, dinners) & on-site accommodation.

Payment of registration fee will follow upon acceptance to the school and exact registration fee will be communicated then as the prices will be updated in 2022.

Payment will be possible only by credit card on CNRS Azur Colloque platform (or by purchase order only for CNRS students).

PRACTICAL INFORMATION:

Transport

The selected PhD students are expected to organize their own travel to and from Finse (there are direct trains to Finse from Bergen and Oslo).

Required equipment

For safety reasons, students will be asked to bring the following equipment (mandatory for participation):

  • Thermal underwear 
  • Thick socks and spare socks
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Waterproof boots
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Wind and waterproof jacket
  • Warm fleece or woollen sweater

It is also highly recommended to bring snow shoes and/or skies.

Selected students will be asked to sign a confirmation that they have the required equipment.

Accessibility

Please note that because of possible snow conditions, it is necessary to be able to walk through snow up to the knees.

People with reduced mobility need to come with a helper with experience of arctic conditions. In such cases, do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions.

COVID-19

A valid EU health pass will be required to join the winter school. The pass must be valid during the whole period of the school (20-26 March 2022).

Note that there are no testing facilities in Finse or nearby.
